What is Myofascial Release Treatment?

When you talk about Myofascial Release or MFR, you are basically referring to an very effective hands-on treatment that uses very gentle force or sustained pressure similar to Acupressure. The focus of Myofascial Release therapy is on the Myofascial connective tissue and the pressure applications are aimed at eliminating pain and restoring motion on the affected areas. The concept behind the pressure application is based on the idea that timely application of gentle pressure will allow the viscoelastic medium (fascia) to elongate and therefore release the tension in the affected muscles.

Some of the common conditions that a patient may consult for Myofascial Release include trauma, joint tensions, muscles pain, and similar conditions. If a patient experiences any muscular tightness, shortness, or loss of flexibility or function, he or she may also turn to Myofascial release an alternative treatment.

Other related physical problems that may be treated by MFR also include injuries from sports or related activities, chronic back pain, shoulder or neck pain, hips or pelvic pain, and pain experienced on areas that contain soft tissue.

What is TMJ?

TMJ or Temporo-Mandibular Joint disorder is a condition that is mostly consulted with Myofascial Release treatment. IN TMJ, there is usually a clicking sound when the person opens and closes his mouth or when he is chewing. This is because the connecting tissue of the jawbone is experiencing stress or tension and can be symptoms of other serious conditions such as arthritis, emotional stress, and even lack of sleep or jaw injury from an accident. There are also people who have a habit of grinding their teeth at night or clenching their jaw when they are thinking or under stress which may also cause TMJ.

For patients experiencing TMJ, the manual manipulation techniques used in Myofascial Release treatment may also help release the tension on the connective tissue and slowly treat the clicking sound and pain on the jaw. There can be a combination of treatments to address the TMJ problem so one session may not be enough to completely treat TMJ issues on patients.

Who Can Provide Myofascial Release Treatment?

If you are experiencing any sort of pain especially with connective tissue and joints, you must consult with osteopath therapists or chiropractors who can help diagnose and create a customized program for your particular condition. There are many physiotherapy clinics that you can call up or visit to get an appointment for consultation with their experienced chiropractors and osteopathic physicians. It is important to remember that you do not need to have chronic pain before consulting with your therapist or going to a physiotherapy center.
